Israel army to reoccupy base near Beit Sahour

settlers_in_oush_ghrab_265x199.jpgBethlehem – Israel's army plans to reoccupy an abandoned military base near Bethlehem, security sources said on Sunday, in a move certain to please settlers seeking to establish themselves in the district.

An Israeli military spokeswoman told Ma'an that the army will rebuild parts of a base in Beit Sahour known as Oush Al-Ghrab "in order to ensure security in the area, according to all of the estimates of officials in the IDF [Israel Defense Forces]."

On Friday, activists aligned with the right-wing settler groups Women in Green and the Committee for Jewish Shdema were in the area for a tree-planting ceremony, part of their weekly efforts to prevent Oush Al-Ghrab "from falling into Arab hands," the settler-affiliated Arutz Sheva news agency reported.

What Did The Palestinian Say To The Policeman?

galinovic___kids.jpgBefore Liz Galinovic travelled through Palestine, she didn't expect to find the locals laughing

It's 10pm on a Wednesday in Beit Sahour, a small town in the West Bank not far from Bethlehem. Two Palestinians offer to show me a place where we can chat over a few beers. We turn left onto a dirt road and bump along into a darkness that reveals only faintly the shape of rubble formations along the side.

The place is Oush Grab, a stretch of land formerly occupied by an Israeli army base. Years of negotiations finally resulted in the Israeli government handing the land over to the Beit Sahour municipality. The municipality embarked on an ambitious project to transform much of the land into an attractive recreation area for young people and families.

I have always been proud of being a Palestinian Christian, born and raised in Bethlehem, the holiest town in all Christianity.

Even before the start of the first intifada, when I was ten years old and before knowing about Christianity and Islam, I knew that two of my uncles were in Israeli prisons along with a couple of young guys from my neighborhood. I was very proud of them. They were in jail for resisting the occupation by reading and educating themselves.

Something is brewing in Palestine
Written by Jonathan Cook

TAYBEH // The small village of Taybeh, nestling in the mountains of the West Bank, has established several Palestinian firsts, but it hopes its latest will make it a household name in the Arab world.

As well as being the only entirely Christian village in the Palestinian territories and running the only Palestinian brewery, it now hopes to export what it is calling a “non-alcoholic beverage”, modelled on its popular Golden Taybeh beer, to Muslims across the Middle East.
